Mental Health Need of Mentally Ills and their Families

Abstract

|
This study attempts to identify mental health need of mentally ills and their families. The sample consists of 50 psychiartic-discharge patients, 52 pts family. The data was gathered by semi-structured interview.
The results revealed that education on symptom and medication(35.1%) was the most wanted mental health needs of patients. The maintenance of interpersonal relationship(29.7%), councelling(21.6%), environmental control(9.5%), financial support(4.1%) were followed. Needs of pts¡¯ family revealed education on disease was the immediate need too(41.9%). Needs on nursing care of pts¡¯ behavior (16.1%), family support & meting(14.5%), financial support(12.9%) were followed. The coping behavior on pt¡¯s symptom of families was mainly positive-active behavioral pattern(64%).
Negative-passive coping behavior(28%) and negative-rejective coping behavior(8%) were followed.
These findings suggest that symptom & medication management program be essential and that negative-passive and negative-rejective coping behavior be turned into positive-active coping behavior.
